It's been a couple months since we announced at a Merchandising Society meeting the opportunity to be an FIT campus trendspotter for the website LookMazing.com. Quick to take the opportunity was FIT student and club member, Kathrin Lewis! Kathrin took the time to tell me a little about her experience and what she does as a trendspotter on campus. Take a look at what she had to say about the program:
I love taking pictures of people's outfits, especially students at FIT since they are some of the most creative and risk taking young people in New York. LookMazing is a site that is expanding to different colleges and areas, and as an official "trendspotter" I simply go up to people on campus and ask if I can photograph their outfit! Once you are hired (non-pay) and set up with an account you can post looks that inspire you, outfits of students on campus, or your own outfits on the site. Everyone here loves to be photographed so it's a fun job and I use the pictures on my personal blog as well. It is a great experience for students who love to blog and are obsessed with street style like me! You are given a mentor when you first begin the program, the mentor helps to guide you in the trend-spotting process and make sure you are posting frequently. Sometimes a certain week there will be a theme such as pastels; so you try to capture looks that coordinate with the theme. For me it has been a great way to talk to and photograph students who's style I admire, I have learned a lot about what brands and trends students gravitate towards. It is a fun and successful program to be a part of, and it looks great on my resume!
