WWD Wednesday: New Film Takes a Historic Look at Street Photography

The upcoming documentary titled “Everybody Street” goes back to the beginning of the New York street style photography (starting 90 years ago!) that has become so popular today. The film’s website explains its inspiration:

’Everybody Street’ illuminates the lives and work of New York’s iconic street photographers and the incomparable city that has inspired them for decades. The documentary pays tribute to the spirit of street photography through a cinematic exploration of New York City, and captures the visceral rush, singular perseverance and at times immediate danger customary to these artists.”

A photographer and documentarian, Cheryl Dunn, is the film’s director. It will be released on November 11 and have showings at the Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema on the 12, 16 and 17 as well. It will also be available on Vimeo prior to its debut “to appeal to the masses” as street photographers have been known to do.

Guest Speaker Knowledge: FM 226 Presentation

Professor Werner will be coming to speak to us at tomorrow’s meeting about the FM 226 program! It is the International Buying and Marketing class that counts for 3 credits. The estimated dates for the upcoming summer 2014 trip are May 29-June 23.

The course description as seen on the FIT website is: “Students, under faculty supervision, visit London, Paris and Florence to study the factors involved in fashion marketing and the international customer’s attitudes about fashion. Discussions involve methods, practices, and reasons for importation and exportation. Students are expected to complete written assignments.”

The prerequisite for taking the class is the approval of the instructor, so it is something you have to apply and interview for. (This means get your DARs and resume ready!)

For more information visit fitnyc.edu and come to tomorrow’s presentation with any questions!

WWD Wednesday: Condé Nast Discontinuing Internship Program

In a breaking article WWD revealed that Condé Nast would be discontinuing its internship program beginning in 2014. The cause of the program termination is the lawsuit brought to the publisher this past summer by two former interns at W and The New Yorker who claimed they were paid below minimum wage. With further research it is revealed that the interns stated they were being paid around $12 for long days; one of the accusers comparing her experience to a real life “Devil Wears Prada” situation. In August it was reported by Huffington Post that Condé Nast was beginning to stop all pay to interns.

This seems to be a trend for many other media companies in the industry.  A former intern at Harper’s Bazaar sued the magazine in February of 2012 over violation of minimum wage and overtime regulations. The case needed to be appealed by the former employee because it was dismissed by a judge and continues to be unsettled. Two interns were successful in their case over similar desecrations of the Fox Searchlight Company this June. It was after this case that the man and woman who had previously interned at Condé Nast publications in 2009 and 2010 filed their lawsuit. Current interns will not be affected by this decision, and it is unclear how many an average class of the internship averages – the number that will no longer have this opportunity. Representatives from WWD, a part of Condé Nast, have not contributed any other comments.

WWD Wednesday: Resee Vintage Clothing Website

The website Resee is a new take on the mixing of a magazine style with a vintage clothing online retailer. Sofia Bernardin of Chinese and Japanese Vogue and Sabrina Marshall of Self Service magazine were the creators of this refreshingly original idea.

“We found that there was no place to find great pieces,” said Bernardin. “I think you have a lot of Web sites out there right now that are focused either on purely vintage, or you have sites that are doing eBay style selling of second-hand clothes. And there was none we found that elegantly merged the two.”

The site features designer clothing, handbags, and shoes that are so relevant to today’s trends that it takes a second look to remember that they are vintage and second hand. Pieces featured on the website have been purchased from private collections as well as vintage stores. The display of the site is an art form itself, allowing you to filter selections by color and themes such as “Androgynous” and “Parisienne.”

There are images of the products similar to those that would be found on any retail website as well as editorial style photos that display the products on models and mixed into interesting backgrounds. The Find features special products and changes weekly; this week is an amazing vintage 1970s Saint Laurent cape. If you check out the website, also be sure to look at the inspiration page- currently showing images and product inspired by 1990s Miu Miu.
