FIT's Daphne Guinness Exhibit: Oh My Guinness!

"This exhibition is done for the benefit of those out there, students or otherwise, who share this love." -Daphne Guinness

As everyone at FIT is aware the Daphne Guinness Exhibit has been on display for quite some time now, but it still has us buzzing! Daphne Guinness has been the fashion world's secret until 2007, when people started to take notice of the heiress. She was at the top of her career in 2009 when she walked in runway shows and became the face of a number of fashion campaigns. However, what has truly caught everyone's is Daphne's undying love for fashion, and unique but instinctive taste.

Daphne is known for wearing the most avant garde pieces in everyday life. But it's like she says,
"We need better things, not more. We should not pollute the world with meaningless, unused things when we can make and support things of rare and precious beauty." -Daphne Guinness

Some call her a muse, others an artist, me? I call her fabulous!
The exhibit is filled with clothing from the socialite's closet. From designers such as Gareth Pugh, Karl Lagerfield, and so much McQueen it will give you chills, to Hogan McLaughlin & Noritaka Tatehana's heel-less platforms, you will be gasping for air.

This Alexander McQueen catsuit & cape is the first of many featured in the exhibit.
The exhibit first gives you an incite on Daphne as a style icon and her point of view of fashion. While TVs display various photoshoots of her, you begin to view some of her collection of shoes. I must warn any shoe fanatics, this may be too overwhelming to take in just once! Each pair is more extravagant than the other. These shoes would definitely require the walker to walk as if on air!

The next part of the exhibit is where you really need someone to pinch you, as this is where all the outrageous outfits are! Split up into 6 sections to really capture Guinness' personality, they are named: DANDYISM, ARMOR, CHIC, EVENING CHIC, EXOTICISM, & SPARKLE. I can promise you that your eyes will light up as you are just inches away from designer pieces that look fresh off the runway. The mannequins each set up in true Daphne like poses and some even in wigs that resemble her 2 toned do!

Part of Daphne's "Exoticism" selections, of which she says "Fashion today is becoming more beige. By that I mean, everyone and everything is starting to look the same- almost like a Mao uniform. We should be flying the flag for individuality."
Each section alludes to her inspiration for wearing the pieces. It will make you admire her even more. For instance, while I gazed at the little black dresses in the CHIC section, I wondered what events could she possibly have worn these to? My answer was right above me...literally! There on the wall was Ms. Guinness' own words, "I don't do event dressing, because everyday is an event." Loves it!

One of Daphne's timeless Chanel looks.
One fact is for sure, Daphne Guinness always chooses a look that's polished. Her wardrobe is tailored to perfection and is structured with a hint of chaos. Having designer BFFs is definitely a plus!

One of the last pieces in the exhibit, only Daphne Guinness would be able to pull this look off
As The Weekender stated last week, go check it out! This is one exhibit that must be experienced and seen with your own eyes! She is a style icon, no argument about that. What is most inspiring is her originality. It is as if she challenges you to be different. The exhibit is viewable until January, so take a break from the books and give it a look! It is unforgettable!

Always keeping an eye out for you,
-Ashley Dudine

P.S. If you still aren't convinced about it, then check out this preview walk through of the exhibit! It might change your mind...
