Oscar de la Renta is taking
a different approach to his show this fashion week. In the article he is quoted
as saying that he’s already experienced, “huge crowds of people with no direct
connection to the clothes.” Now he is looking for a smaller gathering of people
who attend solely for a professional purpose. As opposed to last year’s
extravaganza of two shows, each with 316 guests, he will have a single showing
at his showroom on September 10.
This year the guest list
will not exceed 350 people. When asked the reason for the change, De la Renta
said he wants those that are invited to be comfortable, because his showroom is
a smaller space. He also admitted an even more selfless explanation: he did not
want to inconvenience any other designers who had shows on the same day.
Ultimately De la Renta poses an interesting question when considering how much
of a public scene NYFW has become, “Why have 20 million people with zero
connection to the clothes?”
