MS Loves: London Fashion Week

Feeling sexy and dark today? Then check out what I have in store for you! LONDON FASHION WEEK. The main trend…darkness! Designers such as Temperley, Erdem and Mulberry used many blacks accented with lace and ivories, making to die for pieces!! Check some of these out, and then compare them to the very similar, yet somewhat brighter and more glamorous, New York fashion week!

Lea T., Muse to Givenchy's Tisci on Oprah

WARNING: This issues is about Transsexuality, but I am extremely touched with Lea T.'s story enough to share it.

In case you missed yesterday's Oprah, Lea T. was on to share her story of her past, and the future of becoming a woman. A very emotional story, Lea admits she's frightened to get the sex-change surgery.
"I was hoping I was gay. I was like, ok, I'm gay, because for my family it's less painful....I wish I could accept my body as a man....I would be a straight guy, having a girlfriend and a family, daughters, married, a normal life, but it's something in your brain."
The fashion industry has been known as being one of the leaders in starting the conversation to Transsexuality, I find Lea T.'s story fascinating and very touching. As we can see there is a lot more the the fashion industry than pretty close and profit, it is an opportunity to further our society to become more open minded. I wish you all the best of luck in your journey to help!

The Moment: L.A.M.B. Finale

HOW PRECIOUS!!!

Gwen with her children <3

A Rising Star: Bibhu Mohapatra

If you haven't heard the name Bibhu Mohapatra yet, well this is the season to become aware of this fantastic designer. Though only into his 5th season, Mohapatra presented a very sophisticated and chic collection for the Fall 2011 season that seems to finally be setting an image for his brand.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous collection!!!

Originally better known for evening-wear, Mohapatra presents a wider assortment for Fall 2011, including more outerwear than usual and even some daywear that is perfect for the Upper East Side New Yorker, and potentially even a couple urbanites looking to play dress up.

Materials used saw a lot of goats hair, feathers, wools, chiffons, metallics, leathers, silks; all that translated into beautiful outerwear, sheer daywear, and some elegant cocktail dresses.

I would recommend keeping a close eye on this designer as our journey at FIT continues, something tells me that his talent will continue to gain recognition all over the world. I will for sure be checking this collection out when it hits Bergdorfs in September!!

The Moment: Proenza Schouler's Geometry Class

On Wednesday, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez presented one of the best Fall 2011 collections I've seen yet!!

Inspired by the Native American culture they saw while on a trip through Utah, Nevada, and the other western states, they took the colors, geometrics, and home-spun feel of the culture and translated it into a modern collection bringing fashion back to life!

GOTTA LOVE MY GIRLS <3

Very trend savvy, this Fall 11 collection brings the best of it all, printed pants, a home-spun feel, the bold colors for fall, detailed cutouts, and a flashback to the past that's influenced the designers of today so much. I absolutely love this collection!!

Now check out some fun back-stage pictures, because models can actually smile and have fun too!!

MUUUUAHHH!

Need To Know: Nordstrom Buys HauteLook

It has just been announced that department store chain Nordstrom, will be aquiring HauteLook, the private "flash" sale website, in a stock deal that is valued at up to $270 million!

This is a very smart move considering the way consumers have been changing their shopping habits. Gone are the days where people have a couple afternoons a week to spend searching through department stores for the next great find. Today's shoppers are smarter, and we have technology in the palm of our hands to do all the hard work for us!

No major changes yet!
Saks, and Neiman Marcus are two other competitors that have been playing around with the idea of creating their own "flash" sale websites, however, Nordstrom is the first to have gone ahead and bought an already existing, private, website.

As of now HauteLook will continue to run autonomously, with no indications that Nordstrom is the owner on the website. With 4 million members, Nordstrom has made it clear they are breaking into other ways of doing business as department stores are forced to become more creative.

Very interesting story and watch out for any future developments!!

Happy Anniversary Michael Kors!

The Fall 2011 season marks the 30th anniversary for the strong brand Michael Kors has built, and the collection was a proud representation of all that is Michael Kors and where things may lead to in the coming years.

The men's collection was really stripped down to the core of Kors, sleek, slim, and flattering.

Kors wanted to incorporate features from the past 3 decades into this collection,
"Sporty decadence from the Seventies, the athleticism of the Eighties, restraint from the Nineties."
And with that the collection also remained true to the Kors core beliefs, though not fashion-forward at all, the collection translated into some glamourous looks for evening wear, and daywear seemed very monochromatic, for both the men and women.

Women's was very glamourous when it came to evening wear, but as you can see nothing super exciting, just classically chic.

The question to ask is, for one's 30th anniversary is going to core values worth lacking a fashion-forward appeal? For Kors it certainly was, but hey I guess there is a reason he's been in business for 30 years now right?! Though a strong commercial collection, I'm hoping for a return to fun with the Spring 12 collection to be seen in September.

Monochromatic everything! But you can never go wrong with black!

There's No Place Like Home: Rodarte

Notoriously known for season themes,  Kate and Laura Mulleavy took their Fall 2011 collection to the midwest American plains, and made it look better than ever!!

Loving these backstage snapshots!!
The collection featured the old American prairie feel with wheat-printed skirts and dresses, crocheted knits, pony skin separates, ankle-grazing prairie coats, and geometric prints hinting at the quilting history of the American plains.

The colors stayed classically beautiful with washed out hay and wheat colors, pastel sky blues, ever-changing grays, and most surprising were a couple of bright red dresses in the end! Kate then explained:
"We couldn't go to Nebraska and Kansas and not do a Wizard of Oz reference." (LOVE)
A truly beautiful story at Rodarte for the Fall 11 season!

Though commercial is one thing you can't call this collection, compared to the past few seasons for the Mulleavy sisters, this collection is taking one step closer to attracting a market they have ignored in the past. It will be interesting how the collection translates into the stores of Saks, Bergdorfs, and Barneys! I can't wait to see it up close and in-person!

The Moment: Jeremy Scott

Saving the world at Jeremy Scott!!

4 MINUTES TO SAVE THE WORLD!!
Personally I fell in love with this fall collection!! If anything is a sign that fashion is going back to fun (we're SO over the recession) it's Jeremy Scott's collection! Inspired by the heros and heroines of our youth, it's nice to see clothing become alive again.!

I MUST have that tank top!! And that gown...Anne Hathaway at the Oscars obvs!

Who Said It?

"I have this Ferragamo hot-pink bag that I adore. My view was that I would carry it around only in spring, but it makes me so happy, I'm even now lugging it around in January. I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?"

Guess away on The Cut blog!

Think wisely now! Only one can claim the queen of pink!

A Wonderful Night @ the Style Shop!

As we all know last night was the Spring 2011 opening party for the Style Shop! With a gold and glitter theme it would have been very difficult not to enjoy yourself at such an event.

Glammed out all the way for opening!
Just some of the beautiful MS, SS, and Chanel our alumni that was present last night!

With a great DJ pumping the latest beats into the A-lobby and reaching the inside of our boutique we had a lot of high energy customers roaming in, out, and around the event! Fantastic baked goods were overflowing (thank you to the MS members!) and the buzz was all around campus about the opening of the store, finally 3 weeks into the semester.

Here are Elle & Jackie with our handsome DJ from last night!
Spotted: Our very own FMM chair shopping at the event last night!
We had everyone from students, designers, faculty, and even a couple local New Yorkers in the store checking out the fantastic new product our Style Shop buyers have brought in for this Spring 2011 season.

Just one of the many beautiful necklaces in for Spring 2011.
This season is already looking very trend-savvy for the Style Shop customer, check out some of the fun product in the store for opening!

Overall the event was a great start to what is looking like one of the best Spring seasons the Style Shop will have! With very strong co-mangers, Jackie and Shelby, and a fantastic buying and product development team, you will have to just keep stopping by the store to check out what's new.

Briana is pictured with myself (left) at the fantastic party, and our hardworking co-managers Jackie and Shelby are looking gorgeous for the opening! (right)

Here is a secret I'm excited about: MEN'S IS ALMOST ABOUT TO LAUNCH! Starting with some great men's accessories (because I don't count the denim that was in there last semester), the Style Shop will finally be catering to the fashion-forward male at F.I.T.
And yes, I did already place my gold sequin bow tie aside, sorry boys they are limited edition!

So I hope to see you all stop by the Style Shop this season, and don't forget to comment below with any ideas or suggestions you may have on anything.

As for me, off to the last of the fashion week parties! Adios!

Morning Beauties: Ruby Aldridge & Alejandra Alonso for Vogue Italia

Francesco Carrozzini shot another beautiful editorial for Italian Vogue (Vogue Italia) featuring classic Italian styles, with the designer looks from veteran houses such as YSL, Miu Miu, and others.

Those eyes...
Ruby Aldridge and Alejandra Alonso look stunning in this wonderful Spring/Summer 2011 editorial, and prepare us for the warm weather that is soon to come! Friday is supposed to reach the 60s (sure it's not beach weather but it's definitely light jacket weather!).

BEAUTIFUL STYLING!! Perfect for this Spring!
I can't wait to go to Italy and see women dressed like this!

Final Grammy Gossip: Brittany Demarco

One of my favorite things to do after an award show is to watch Fashion Police on E! with Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic, and George Kotsiopoulos.  Although I’m sure this does not pertain to our readers, if you have never seen Fashion Police, the ‘officers’ recap the special night being highlighted and bash or applaud celebs on their fashion choices.  My favorite segment is the “Best and Worst dressed” so I figured I would do my own best and worst dressed of the Grammys, with a few honorary mentions.

I’ll start…with the bad news. My worst pick for the night was Nicki Minaj. Although I am fan of her music I just could not support her on this one. Her animal print getup from head to toe was just too much to handle in one sitting! And even though I’m no hair stylist, I think it speaks for itself. Sorry Nicki!

I see here a cross between a Lady Gaga wanna-be and Cruella DeVille.
Now for the good news! My best dressed award came to a tie between two beautiful ladies, Jennifer Hudson and Eva Longoria. Let’s start with Jennifer Hudson; the girl has never looked better! She was amazingly slim and rocking the navy blue, I only wish her hair wasn’t covering part of the gorgeous beadwork on her dress! She is a beauty and a positive role model to many.

Finally, Miss Longoria, who has always been a fashion inspiration for me, whether it’s her hair and makeup (which I modeled after for my senior prom!) or fashion choices, she always looks stunning! She kept it simple and classy with an above-the-knee black and white ruffled dress, accented with dangle earrings. Great job ladies, keep up the good work!

I had to do a double-take to even realize this was her!
I also want to make an honorary mention for the best turn-around of the night; Nicole Polizzi, better known as Snooki from the Jersey Shore. Many associate her as being “trashy”, wearing cheap and extremely short dresses; however at the Grammys she looked just as chic as the rest! Good job Snooks, classy looks good on you!

I think that just about sums it up for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards! Leave us your comments and opinions on who YOU think made best and worst dressed! Check out this link to see E! Fashion Police clip, featuring the Grammys. Thanks for reading!

xoxo,

Brittany

Because we have already heard so much about Lady Gaga's "egg" appearance: NONE FOR LADY GAGA BYE!!
