The editorial for the magazine was photographed by Steven Klein, who is a genius behind the camera. This wouldn't be the first time that he shot an editorial that had a darker, more dramatic vibe. Most of his work is actually similar to Moss' photos, only Kate adds more excitement to them.
GOOD KATE
Fashion director Edward Enninful also took part in this shoot and unlike other fashion mags that are embracing the bright color statements of spring, he decided to show the dark side of the spring collections. Kate is featured in such labels as Balenciaga, Jil Sander, The Row, Louis Vuitton, Oscar de la Renta and more.
BAD KATE
The only words I can use to describe this spread is dramatically brilliant. It's insane to see how Kate Moss can look angelic in white lace and then the next photo shows her deviant in black leather. We always see her as the pretty face, but this shows more character and that she can do other types of photos!
Can you tell this is actually Kate Moss?
Will Self wrote the articles about her and really explained the reasoning behind the darkness of the shoot. He first started with:
"When I pore over these wonderful images of the model, designer, and eternal waif Kate Moss, firefly thoughts flit in and out of the dark halls of my mind...Kate Moss seems to have always been with us—and to have always been as she is. Yet the truth is that she’s 38, twice married, and the mother of a 9-year-old girl. Her life has been a slalom through the toxicities of fame and success."
"I look at the pictures of Moss dressed in black and think perhaps they’re of a great beauty meditating upon her own inner ugliness."
No matter how eerie the setting is, she always looks pretty!
W's Stefano Tonechi was also glad to shed some light on his inspiration for Kate's play on good girl-bad girl styling, with this statement:
"As I sat through the spring collections in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, I kept thinking about the dichotomy between 'good girls' and 'bad girls.' It's an old trope that the fashion world loves to recycle every few seasons.....This season, however, the good girls seemed to constantly stray into bad-girl territory, and vice versa. Designers are too savvy to go for straightforward cliches, and what I found most interesting was the way in which they tweaked familiar archetypes."
