FYI: Job & Internship Fair! and KOHL'S

If you need a change of employment, a new opportunity, or fresh place to learn all about the industry you want to head into after school, consider checking out the FIT Job & Internship Fair on Tuesday, October 11th from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm in the Great Hall (Between D and C buildings). This fair is a great way to get out there and meet with people from the industry, pass out your resume, and set up some interviews!

Get to work!

Companies that will be at the fair include Burlington Coat Factory, Macy's, Maidenform, Net-A-Porter, Chico's, PVH, and Kohl's. For more info click here.

How to Make a Great First Impression at the Career Fair:

  • Dress smart! Dig that blazer out of your closet and style it to your specific taste so that you look classy but unique.
  • Invest in some high quality resume paper. Fashion Design Books across the street from FIT sells single sheets for only 55 cents each!
  • Prepare a short speech about yourself. Since there are so many people at the job fair, you'll only have a minute or two to introduce yourself to each recruiter. Some things to highlight about yourself: Your current/most recent employment, what you like about the company you are speaking to, and your goals, whether long-term or short-term.
  • Ask a few questions! If you're looking for an internship be sure to ask whether a company requires school credit or not, if they have a preference about your year in school (some companies only like to hire juniors and seniors for internships), etc.
  • Smile!! Be friendly and approachable. A recruiter will always remember your effervescence so much more than she will remember you being a stony, college-aged version of Miranda Priestly

As mentioned, Kohl's will be at the job fair on Tuesday. They will also be speaking at Tuesday's MS meeting! This is a great way for us to connect with the company in a smaller setting. Kohl's has always been very supportive of FIT and MS, so be sure to bring your highest level of interest and lots of questions to ask their reps at our meeting!

Jenny from the Block works it hard a Kohl's! (And her line is GORG)
A Little Bit of Info on Kohl's:
  • Kohl's is the leading family-oriented department store in the U.S.
  • Their products include apparel, footwear and accessories for men, women and children; soft home products including linens and bedding; and housewares.
  • They operate 1,127 stores in 49 states! (Wow!)
  • Kohl's carries national brands as well as private labels brands (Hello J-Lo!). (Source)
Marketing genius. Love ya Brit!

Questions You Can Ask!:
  • The company's comps are up this September from last year. What approaches did the company take to make positive gains from last year to this year? What are you doing as a company to ensure Kohl's continues to trend upward?
  • The company just partook in Phoenix Children's Hospital's Day of Play. What other community efforts does Kohl's take part in?
  • You have lines with Jennifer Lopez, Daisy Fuentes, Lauren Conrad, and Bobby Flay (to name a few!). Any hints as to who the company plans to work with next?
  • How did the company transform Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's combined deal to separate, individual deals so quickly after they announced their seperation?
  • And lastly, what is your favorite thing about working at Kohl's?!

So study up, readers! Enjoy your Sunday and we'll see you Tuesday!
